Prof. Peter Quartey, Executive Director of ReFinD, visited the Ethiopian Economics Association (EEA) to reinforce the growing partnership between the two institutions and deepen collaboration aimed at advancing financial inclusion in Ethiopia. The working visit focused on reviewing project reports submitted by EEA, refining the dissemination strategy, and identifying opportunities for future joint research to strengthen Ethiopia’s agent network ecosystem.
As part of this collaboration, EEA conducted a scoping study examining Ethiopia’s agent network and the broader banking and financial ecosystem. The ReFinD-funded study analysed key characteristics, market structures, stakeholder dynamics, operational challenges, and regulatory frameworks shaping agent banking in the country, providing an in-depth assessment of the sector.
The research offers a strong evidence base for understanding the structure and performance of Ethiopia’s agent banking landscape. By mapping the ecosystem and identifying regulatory and operational bottlenecks, the study lays the groundwork for targeted interventions to enhance financial access, particularly for underserved and rural populations.
Speaking during the visit, Prof. Quartey emphasised the importance of translating research into impact: “Strong agent networks are critical to building inclusive financial systems. The work undertaken by EEA provides valuable insights that can inform policy, strengthen industry practice, and ultimately expand access to financial services for those who need them most.”
Prof. Quartey’s visit to EEA in October 2025 reaffirms ReFinD’s commitment to working closely with local research institutions to generate policy-relevant evidence, strengthen regional knowledge exchange, and foster long-term collaboration.
